The search for a contemporary instrument is an exciting journey. There are several qualities to look for as you begin to play each instrument. It must be easy to play, responding to the bow in both piano and forte passages. Careful attention should be paid to a graceful transition across the registers of the instrument from top to bottom, each register complimenting the previous one with its unique voice. You must be attracted to the fundamental tonal color of the instrument. The characteristic voice of the violin, viola, or cello will not change as the instrument develops. 

What changes as the instrument is played? There is a process of development as a new instrument begins to mature. Through playing, a new level of sophistication will become increasingly apparent as the sound acquires a richer, more complex palette of overtones. Many of the strictly mechanical aspects of sound production will recede. With every hour of playing invested, you will enjoy the tangible rewards.
